University of Mississippi School of Medicine, (UMMC) is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi. The medical center opened in 1955, but its beginnings date to 1903 when a two-year medical school was established on the parent campus in Oxford. UMMC offers professional medical education for a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Located in Jackson, the medical school offers MD/PhD dual degree programs. William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM) is a private institution located in Hattiesburg, MS. WCUCOM’s curriculum and coursework are very similar to other osteopathic medical school programs except that it provides special emphasis in the following areas: osteopathic manipulative medicine, community and behavioral medicine, ambulatory care, and rural and community-based medical practice.
