Dr. Susan E. Wellman, emeritus faculty in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at UMMC, died July 18. She was 63.
A native of Morganton, North Carolina, Wellman received her bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Ph.D. in chemistry from Florida State University. She was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at UMMC and subsequently joined the Medical Center faculty in the Department of Pharmacology. She retired from UMMC as a full professor in 2010.
Wellman was a locally recognized musician who performed with Bounds Street, a popular Celtic band. She was a member of the Mississippi Chorus and the Summer Women’s Chorus and was a founding member of St. Brigid’s, a Vocal Ensemble, She was also a fabric artist, seamstress and knitter.
Arrangements for a memorial service at a future date are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Campaign for Children’s of Mississippi at UMMC.
