Mississippi State Hospital Launches New Psychiatry Residency Program

Published on Friday, June 18, 2021

The Mississippi State Hospital (MSH) announced the opening of its new Psychiatry Residency Program with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 21st.

The four-year program, which will formally begin on July 1, 2021, will train six residents per year and is located on the Whitfield, Mississippi State Hospital campus.

MSH recently completed the renovation of the Graduate Medical Education Building which will serve as the residency's home office.

The program, led by Program Director, Jon C. Jackson, aims to increase access to mental healthcare across the state by retaining more psychiatry physicians.

Mississippi has a severe shortage of mental health services. Psychiatrists are unevenly distributed throughout the United States, with more psychiatrists concentrated in the Northeast, the location of most psychiatry training programs.
